Spring Cleaning: What to Keep on File!

As the clocks spring forward this month, it serves as a gentle nudge that spring cleaning is just around the corner. And what better time to embark on some decluttering? The task of figuring out where to begin may seem daunting, but fear not! This year, The Steller Group is stepping in to lend a helping hand by hosting a Shred-a-Thon on Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 10 AM to 1 PM in our office parking lot at 6658 S. Broadway, Centennial, CO 80121.

Now that you're geared up to tackle that old pile of paperwork, let's consider what to hold onto and what to recycle or bring to the shredding event.

 Items to SAVE:

  • Taxes for the last seven years
  • Stock sale documents for the last seven years
  • Home records for five years post-sale
  • Final mortgage payoffs
  • Home maintenance and improvement receipts, warranty documents, and records pertaining to your current residence
  • Car payoffs, car titles, car maintenance records
  • Birth, adoption, and death certificates, marriage licenses, divorce decrees, social security cards, and military discharge papers
  • Trust documents & wills
  • Most other items can be shredded, such as old bank statements and utility bills. Appliance manuals can be recycled since they are now readily available online. Similarly, old newspapers and magazines can also be recycled.

If you believe there are copies worth preserving, consider scanning them onto your computer and saving them in a digital file. This can be conveniently done at home with a smartphone or scanner. For technical assistance or larger quantities, consider utilizing scanning services such as FedEx or UPS, or nearby locally owned companies. The ultimate goal is to maintain one well-organized file cabinet containing all necessary items for future reference.

If you find yourself in need of assistance transporting your boxes to the Shred-a-Thon on May 18, please do not hesitate to reach out to The Steller Group, and we will be more than happy to lend a hand!
